I can’t say this often enough: the context to this famous image was the Nazis destroying humane, progressive research from the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, who researched and campaigned for rights for LGBT people. Where would we be had they not destroyed it? #LGBTHistoryMonth
I think it’s also worth remembering that Hirschfeld spent the 1930s trying to engage the nazis in an open debate about sexuality - he really believed the liberal conception that a free exchange of ideas in a civil forum would eventually lead to the right ideas coming out on top. He used to write them letters full of scientific reasoning and rational arguments asking them to vote against paragraph 175 in the Reichstag… this is where it ended up
