I can’t help thinking of all the people freezing to death right now, watching their children get sicker and sicker, as their bodies eat themselves to keep them going in a world that denies them their most basic needs.
While you are comfortable, there are many, many people who never have been. There are people without “luxuries” who need those things to just survive.
I remember the night I spent giving warmth to my kid, as the other kicked away in my belly, despite the intense pain I was in. I was unable to mourn my dead lover because I was running on survival adrenalin. I did my best and it wasn’t enough, because everyone just kept saying no. No. No. Thousands of nos that brought me and my children so close to death…
I was alone. I was forgotten. I was denied housing, food, warmth, human kindness and decency. No one cared.
People deserve better. Be grateful for everything you have, especially if you have people who care about you.
Be kind to those who have been denied housing. We are people, too. Give jackets and money and conversation and medicine and phones and food directly to them as much as possible. It may make you uncomfortable, but it’s the difference between life and death for us.
So many people don’t have a safety net when they make mistakes. All too often, it’s not even their mistakes that lead them to their death, but the lack of choices they have to determine their path through life and the apathy and carelessness and callousness of their community.
Poverty doesn’t have to be a death trap. It doesn’t have to be. Have you ever even wondered why it is?
It is so so cold out there in the world. If you have a flame, share the warmth. Share the warmth. Even the little things - especially the little things - can make all the difference. Just keep doing it.
You don’t have to like us. You don’t have to understand us. But how do you expect the world to be a better place if you don’t make it so?
Small acts can change the world. There is always something you can do. Always.
